EMMET GOWIN

Emmet Gowin is one of the most of amazing people I have ever met. Had I had the luxury of ever being his student, I imagine I would have failed his class simply by being so captivated. The son of a preacher, when he finally broke the news to his family that he was going to become a photographer, they signed with relief when his father told him, "Well at least you aren't going to be one of them artists".

Gowin is most well know for the intimate images of his wife Edith and his family over the years, although he has other important series which I will feature at a later date. Its a rare artist who can photograph his loved ones and bring forth their inner being and beauty through imagery. Like Sally Mann, another fellow Virginian who searches for the exquisite personal documentation of her loved ones, his ability to penetrate the personal barrier of his family and bring forth the tenderness of his shared relationship, is precious.
