Francesca Woodman
I was in my mid 20's when I first saw Francesca Woodman's work illuminated through a slide projected in a class lecture. Her work appeared to be cathardic and investigative. She embraced her body as a fluid vehicle of self-exploration and determined expression; and an extention of her dreamy surroundings in some instances. Lyrical and unworldly, she tapped into a personal pursuit so many can relate to.
The daughter of two well known ceramicists, she lived in both Italy and Colorado during her youth, later going the expected east coast route, pursuing a degree at Rhode Island Institute of Art on to NYC. Francesca Woodman would have been 49 years old this month had she not committed suicide in 1981.
